Remove dog smell from the home: These tips help

Every dog owner probably knows the problem, if his four-legged darling has a very own and not exactly fragrant scent. Depending on the breed, this scent can be more or less strong. Especially long-haired breeds can develop an intense smell when it rains or the dog is simply wet.

Here many dog owners despair regularly, especially when the not exactly pleasant scent has settled in the house. Here, many remedies promise quick and effective help, but they do not always keep their promises. Therefore, we now look specifically at what really helps to remove the dog smell from the apartment. But before we do so, we will have a look at how the smell gets into the apartment.

By nature, dogs have their own body odour. This varies from breed to breed and the longer the coat, the more intense the smell is in certain situations. Now many dog owners know the problem of a bad-smelling four-legged friend, but why suddenly the whole flat smells like a dog is still a mystery to many. But the solution is so simple.

The dog moves in the apartment, he lies on his blanket, on the carpet or on the couch. The odour particles on the dog’s fur are naturally transferred to all other fibres with which he comes into contact.
Depending on the nature of the fibres, these odour particles can sometimes become quite stubbornly attached to them. But even if the dog is wet and smells and lies down on the tiled or laminate floor, a certain smell remains. However, this is not so easily noticed by the dog owner, because the odour particles cannot settle here, so the smell disappears again after a while.
Let’s now look at different possibilities to get rid of the smell of the dog, which can be so persistent in the apartment. Here also different means help quite well sometimes, however, there are also still some household remedies which get to the unpleasant smell which the dog has distributed in the flat and has left behind.

The large plaster is a very moderate means to get rid of the dog smell in the flat. Both vinegar cleaners and conventional floor cleaning agents are suitable for this purpose. However, it should also be considered that the cleaning water should be as hot as possible.

If you want to be on the safe side, you should wipe twice in any case. First with a good vinegar cleaner and then with a fragrant cleaning agent a second time. Vinegar cleaner does not only provide certain hygiene, it also already binds a part of the odour particles while wiping.

Washing all blankets and pillows can also help to remove dog odour from the home. In this case, however, you should never skimp on using fabric softener. Especially the dog blankets are a source of the odour.

Clean the Couch yourself

But whenever the dog is also allowed on the couch, blankets and pillows should be washed here. In this case it is also recommended to clean the couch yourself. If you have a leather couch, you should wipe it thoroughly. Of course, a commercial all-purpose cleaner can be used for this purpose, but detergent can also be used here.

But those who want to try something completely different should clean the couch with warm water and hair shampoo. Shampoo offers a number of advantages. On the one hand, it is so that traces of smell are eliminated. On the other hand, however, it is also so that the dog also leaves a greasy film. Although this is very fine and barely perceptible to the human eye, it is still there. Hair shampoo removes this fine grease film particularly well and leaves a fresh scent.

Dog on the Couch

Lemon water is also an outstanding scent killer. However, it should only be used after cleaning, but can also be applied to upholstery and other surfaces. It is also a moderate household remedy against vermin that the dog may have left on the couch, carpet or in his basket.

Fragrance sprays such as Febreze and similar products are only suitable to a limited extent. Although the couch can be treated with them, the dog should not come into contact with them for at least two to three hours. Contrary to the conviction of many people, the strong fragrances are not good for the sensitive dog nose and can irritate the mucous membranes.
Of course, nobody has to wait until the apartment smells as unpleasant as the dog. If you want to prevent this, you should give your dog a bath in time. A gentle dog shampoo with a scent, a puppy shampoo or even better, a standard baby chamomile bath is particularly suitable for this purpose. The latter also ensures that the fat layer of the lower cost structure is not destroyed.

Of course, this has not only advantages but also disadvantages, which do not fit to this topic, but I can only say that my pelt-nose only smells like dog if it got wet. Otherwise the little mouse always smells like fresh popcorn, which I find very pleasant. I could bury the nose deep in the fur of my mouse all day long. Should my dog smell because he has perfumed himself outside, then he is washed with a mild dog shampoo and everything is fine again.

Use the shampoo specially formulated for his skin and coat

Even though I love my dog, I find it terrible when the whole apartment smells of him. That’s why I regularly bathe my dog with a shampoo specially formulated for his skin and coat. Surely some people will now come up with the argument that if you bathe your dog, you would harm him, I can only say that I think this is an old wives’ tale. The dogs nowadays live in our house, which is quite different from dogs that are in the wild. I think that we do not harm our dogs if we bathe them regularly. We would rather harm ourselves if we inhaled all the dirt of the dogs day after day or absorbed it with our bodies because the dogs are family and spend a lot of time on the sofa or in bed. There are many causes of bad breath in dogs

There are many causes of bad breath in dogs. Plaque and tartar are not always to blame: more serious illnesses can also be the cause of the bad smell from dogs’ mouths.

If the bad mouth odour occurs very suddenly and without a recognisable cause (e.g. after a change of food), you should definitely consult a vet, describe any other symptoms and name previous illnesses. The veterinarian can then clarify whether there is a possible disease of the organs or a metabolic disorder. Both can lead to stinking symptoms. Before buying any food for your dog always seek for professional advice: petfoodreviews.online – The Best Pet Information

If there are no illnesses, the dog is therefore in the best of health, plaque and tartar, as well as food, remains in the muzzle, are usually to blame for the bad breath of dogs. And these causes can be easily eliminated with the following tips.

Hey , great article here. I’m wondering would vinegar or lemon water or both be a good solution for getting rid of urine smell?
My dog has a tiny bladder and sometimes it happens at night….. I’m taking him out like 5 times a day, but still….
Found a tone of information all love the internet but couldn’t make my head around it.

In case you ask or suggest. I have been to Vets, but they said there is nothing wrong with him, just small, sensitive bladder.

Appreciate any suggestion you might have.

Hi Lena. Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are right. Using white vinegar is a great idea but using it with baking soda is the best way to get rid of the urine smell. You can mix white vinegar with water and add 3 teaspoons of baking soda. This should help! Also, control the amount of water your dog drinks, do not leave a full bowl of water all the time, try to dose it.
