Moving to a new house can be an exciting yet challenging time for anyone from first-time buyers to experienced movers. One of the main causes of stress is the sheer number of decisions you are faced with as you attempt to put your own personal stamp on the new property. Surprisingly enough, the main pieces of furniture like sofas, beds and dining tables are often the most straightforward to choose and it’s the smaller yet more personal items such as art to fill your home with that people struggle with the most. With that in mind here is a guide to help you choose art for your new home that will both speak to you and your visitors.

Trust In your Taste

Most people will go “safe” with their choices of furniture, curtains, paint and wallpaper leaving a lot of modern houses looking samey. Sticking the conventions with your décor is ok but it’s a good idea to combine this with your personal tastes when it comes to art in the form of pictures on the walls and sculptures or ornaments. This will separate your home from all the others with conventional décor and add a certain individual spark to it. Don’t be afraid to be bold with your choices to add your own personality to it.

Become A Connoisseur

This doesn’t mean that you need to be an expert in art and know who the latest up and coming artists are. You could simply start by visiting a couple of your local art galleries which you will find in most towns and every city. Just take the time to walk about and look at the different styles. This will introduce to a range of different pieces of art and you might come away liking a certain style or artists that you never knew existed. Knowing what you like and what you don’t like is half the battle when choosing art.

Don’t Forget The Bathroom

When choosing art for your new home it can be easy to overlook certain rooms and spaces in the house and the most commonly overlooked is the bathroom. This is an opportunity to be a little more playful and personal with your choices as bright pieces are always a great addition to any bathroom. Consider having 3 pieces of playful art lined up side by side over the bath, they should be playful and colourful, animals are a popular choice for art like this but the choice is yours.

Look For A Good Deal

One of the main concerns when choosing art for your new home is the price. Often art can be pricey but it doesn’t have to be. You don’t need to look for original pieces; there are lots of high street retailers and second-hand shops with great pieces of art for sale at really good prices. If you are looking for something at the higher end of the scale then be sure to negotiate a payment plan with the seller. Many retailers offer credit-free monthly payments or buy now, pay later deals which are great for movers who have lots of expenses to pay out.

Go Local

With all the choices available to you it can be easy to become overwhelmed and not know where to start. If you are feeling like this then you should start your search by looking up some local artists in your area. Not only will their art be more accessible to you, but it will also usually depict local sights and/or characters which actually convey a message that you will appreciate. Filling your home with art from your own country or town is a great way to add some much-needed character and transform your house into a home.
