Podcast popularity has exploded in the last number of years. Smartphones have largely become ubiquitous all over the globe and with people on the go a lot of the time whether it’s on their commute or traveling, there is a huge appetite for content in many formats. Podcasts are very convenient for people to digest in that they come in bite-size chunks – anything from a few minutes to hours and can be standalone or a series and can be listened to anywhere and at any time; you can download podcasts in advance too so no need to have a WiFi connection as you travel. There are podcasts now in many different niches all over the world and their popularity is still very much on the rise. As a result of the increased demand for this type of content, there is also increased pressure to produce podcasts and this sometimes results in podcasts of varying quality. It’s similar to when phone and tablet apps first existed, there was a large output of low-quality applications. So you do need to weed through to find those podcasts that are of better quality than others. The great thing is though that once you find a podcast that you like, you can subscribe and be alerted for when any new content is released.
Many podcasters are committed to consistent output and this can delight listeners. The beauty of podcasts is the variety – of course, the niche is famous for its true crime podcasts like “Serial” but there are so many more light-hearted podcast productions available too.
